Mahatma Gandhi's methods and the Delhi gang-rape case

I had no intention of writing this post, however, after I read a fellow blogger's long post on the matter, could not refrain from commenting on it.
"You know what the saddest part of the story is?

This happens everyday, every single day, in one or the other part of the country.

This time there was nothing that the media had to show since there is pressure from politicians to reduce reporting of scams so they are showing the story. Otherwise, trust me, nothing would have happened.

Even today such incidences are happening across the country, but no one is interested to cover them. They are getting the TRPs from 1 incident, so why work harder!

Sad, but true!"
I've always felt that the reason why Gandhi's methods were successful in the independence movement was because he had master strategists in his team. His methods are like weapons. In the hands of a smart master, they'll achieve everything from him. In the hands of a buffoon, they are dangerous for everyone including its master.

These master strategists knew that for these unconventional (read peaceful) weapons to work they had to be very clear about what the goal/objective of the particular campaign or protest is. And, accordingly, keep all their energies focussed on the goal and refrain from useless rhetoric.

That is exactly what's not happening today. The youth are participating in peaceful protests. But what is their goal? To hang this bunch of half a dozen people. How is that going to help? Its probably only going to scare the rapist leading to the rape victims being murdered after the crime. Scared not of the capital punishment, but of the money that he would have to pay to various people to get away. That is the harsh reality that the urban youth refuses to listen to and understand. Unfortunately, there isn't one mature leader in the country today who can lead campaigns of such scale to logical conclusions.

To get on the streets shouting slogans whether to vent your rage or to be doing the 'in-thing' is not useful. Get on the streets to resolve the problem. Have a clear goal that will have a long term effect. Think about it, the cause of these incidents lies somewhere in the general preference for hatred (instead of love) and the desperation for materialistic gains which are out of one's reach (aka greed). We need to work on these factors. Add to this focus on education (and not degrees) and respectful employment and we are on the right path.

Honestly, while people have their sanguine or cynical opinions about the country's future. I have absolutely no clue where it is heading. Change is happening, and radically so. And change in technology is going to further multiply the rate of social change.

In the end I would like to leave the youth who are out on the streets with just one thought -
"Are you on the streets to ensure that the 6 rapists are hanged or do you want to ensure that no rapes happen in the future? Think about it because the two are not the same."

Lesson 1: When caring can cause pain

Sometimes you care for someone a lot. Maybe there was a time when the other person loved you for it. But then times change. So do people, and, relationships.

You may come to a stage when your relationship is not the same anymore, caused by the other person's disinterest. But you still love the person, and care for him/her.

But you are intelligent enough to understand that the manifestation of this caring in your behavior may bother/hurt the other person, so while in your heart you feel, you would not act as if you care.

This in certain cases would lead to a false presumption that you don't care, but then that was your intention in the first place, right? The good thing is that it proves you are a good actor.

Now this means that the other person may be in some problem, and you care, and you can't help because the other person does not want your help, and you can't even show that you care. Now, this, is when caring can cause pain. And, lots of it!

Look into my eyes - Part I

There was something so pure about them,  that they could touch anyone's soul. As I looked at those eyes, she noticed me. The smile on her face vanished, and beads of sweat appeared on the forehead. The train doors closed, but those eyes remained fixated at me.

A few seconds had passed, I was still trying to convince myself that what I saw was true, when my phone rang.

"I want to talk to you"

"Be at the City Center in 10 mins, alone", I said.

That was the next station for me. Didn't have to work too hard to get out, the crowd pushed me straight to the center of the platform. That's what the life of an average professional in a metropolis is like.

---

As I waited for her, my mind went back to the time I first saw her. It was almost 2 years back, my first day at the job. I had felt a sudden push followed by the sound of stuff falling. "Ouch" I turned back. There was this pretty lady collecting papers which had fallen out of a file. As I bent to help her, she apologised. Her gaze turned to me, that was it. Didn't see her for a long time after that.

Two months later, I saw her. Walking towards me with my boss.

"Hi J, this is Anita. She'll be assisting you on the project and will take over when you get your promotion later this year!"

"Hi, I'm Joe, everyone calls me J here!"

"Hi, nice to meet you!"

We exchanged pleasantries, then as we chatted I came to know she went on a leave after finishing her last project, to get married.

About 3 months passed, we had developed a nice friendship. One of these days I saw her talking to her husband on the phone. Could not make out what she was saying. She was looking at a distance, but not looking at anything. She was in a different world, totally engrossed in that conversation. Anyone could make out the love in her eyes.

Since a long time I was wondering what I would want my life partner to be like, that was it. Love, straight from the soul. I just wanted a person who could love me that much.

---

A few more months passed. Time brought us closer and we became very good friends. I had also become friends with her husband and we met a number of times on weekends for lunch and dinner. Another month or so, and my promotion was made official. I was to take charge of one of the offices in another city. Didn't meet her after that, though we spoke frequently.

---

"Please don't tell anyone"

I didn't reply. Just moved to the exit of the station, as she followed me. I looked around. It was dusk time. The lights in the city center market had been switched on. I looked around for signs of an area where we could get away from the madding crowd to be able to talk freely. I cared for her too much, to talk about it in public.

I noticed an arrow pointing to a park. Started walking in that direction as she followed me. No words had been exchanged for almost ten minutes now. I guess, this is what trust is about. You just follow the person knowing that it could only be good for you. We reached the park, it was almost empty, only the guard and a couple of people roaming about. We walked to a bench where no one could see or, hopefully, hear us.

"Who was he?"

Wallpaper :: The New Tricolor

The tricolor was meant to be a symbol of unity, but over a period of time it has been misinterpreted to mean something totally different. The present fundamentalist interpretation is that people of one religion represented by Saffron are at the top and people of another represented by Green at the bottom. In the name of peace the two are kept separate and comparisons are drawn (white) and over this is a garb of unity (the chakra in the middle).
TO break this we have the new remodelled Tricolor where the focus is on unity (ashok chakra), the saffron and green stand together around it - in some ways the saffron is on top, in others the green, and there is PEACE in the middle and all around(white).

It's genetic...

Met a very elderly person yesterday who was formerly, a prof in the mechanical engineering department of IIT. My father asked him whether he knew my grandfather who was a prof in the mechanical engineering department of DCE, a visiting faculty in many institutes and author of numerous books on the subject.

His first response was "Yes absolutely! We used to call him 'harfan maula' (master of all skills)".

That sort of sealed the answer to the question in my mind related to my uncanny desire to keep learning new and varied things. I might not be a 'master of all skills' but over the years have developed into a Jack of many. And now I know where its coming from. From a person who was gone long before I was born!
